Aboriginal Art Murals in Schools

Indigenous murals are wonderful ways to very visibly celebrate Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander culture in your school. They can also be a fantastic way to build connections both within and outside of your school, with your Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and communities.

Having a mural in your school provides an opportunity for students to be exposed on a daily basis to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander art styles; it can also be a great platform on which to introduce students to both past and contemporary Indigenous art.

In a broader sense, it can help create a learning environment which champions cultural pride. This is important not only for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at your school, but for the non-Indigenous students, it can help to deepen awareness and appreciation of Indigenous culture. You will also find that many Indigenous artists engaged to do such work, are keen to include students in the creation of the mural, which as a project, can be a wonderful way to foster belonging and team work.

So if you have a blank wall, path, building, anything really, in your school, early childhood service or workplace, why not consider engaging a local Indigenous artist to come and create a special piece with your students. It is sure to be an enriching experience for all involved, and will serve as a daily reminder of all who see it, that your school values and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
