Earth Day 2022

Each year on April 22, billions of people across the globe join together to raise awareness about environmental protection. This global event is known as Earth day. The theme for this year is “Invest In Our Planet.”

The key point here is to act in a bold wayinnovate in a broad way, and implement in an equitable manner. We think this aligns perfectly with our NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week themes this year, both of which are centred around individuals stepping up and speaking out to make a difference. There is a real focus on looking at what differences we as individuals, as organisations and communities, can do to make impact.

Sustainability is a key part of caring for our world and ensuring it for future generations, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander caring for Country principles show that our mobs have been doing this for many thousands of years. How we care for our Country relates back to the custodial relationship we have with the land and waters and all that live within the landscape; the responsibilities people have to look after their Country, ensuring it is protected physically and sustained spiritually, through cultural songs, stories and ceremony.

Bringing Aboriginal perspectives into your sustainability lessons in the classroom is wonderfully enriching. Here are a few resources to get you started:
