If you are a teacher or educator looking to be intentional in how you bring First Nations perspectives into your classroom this year, this is for you!

With the conversation facilitated by Carol Vale, Dunghutti CEO of Indigenous Consultancy Murawin, Aunty Leanne and Lesley will be engaging in an informative discussion where they will be exploring questions like:

  • What actually is ‘connection to Country’ and why is it important?

  • Why are local perspectives critical in this space?

  • What are some practical strategies for engaging in this within my educational setting?

  • Where does ‘Country’ actually fit in my curriculum?

  • There will be time for Q&A at the end.

About the speakers:

Aunty Leanne King is Dharug woman from the Boorooberongal clan with qualification in education and Indigenous social policy. A passionate educator, Leanne has spent over 30 years teaching in the Aboriginal education space, including as a senior lecturer at a number of Australian universities and more recently focusing her time sharing story on Country.

"What I do is share the stories that have been shared with me. Doing that respectfully and paying respects to those that have given me those stories.” Leanne says.

Leanne sees the move from the classroom to taking people out on Country as a natural and essential progression. “In a classroom you can only feel so much. I think what we need to do is change attitudes. And not until you can get out on Country and feel Country and let Country talk to you, can you actually, really learn.” explains Leanne.

Lesley Woodhouse is a Dharug woman from the Boorooberongal clan. She is the founder and CEO of Wingaru Education, a specialist organisation developing and delivering education programs and resources to support schools, teachers and organisations. Lesley is passionate about changing the way Australia talks about Aboriginal people and the issues impacting our communities through supporting a greater understanding amongst the wider community. Wingaru aims to simplify First Nations perspectives for school to support teachers to feel more confident in including regular First Nations content in the classroom.
